CARD Launches Legacy Landmarks Project to Honor Community History
September 23, 2025

Chico Area Recreation & Park District (CARD) is proud to announce the launch of its Legacy Landmarks project, a new initiative dedicated to sharing the stories of the people whose passion, service, and vision shaped CARD operated parks, programs, and public spaces.
From the familiar names of Hooker Oak Park, Dorothy F. Johnson Center, and Chico Peppers Field to the more personal stories behind Michelle Brooks Field and Ron Doryland Field, the Legacy Landmarks project highlights the individuals who left a lasting impact on the community. Each story recognizes the unique contributions of those who helped build, protect, and enrich the spaces that Chico residents enjoy today.
“This project was really important to me personally,” said Kelsey Horne, CARD Marketing Specialist. “So many of these stories have been lost to the digital age, and I wanted to make sure we kept their memories alive. By sharing who these people were and why these places bear their names, we’re helping future generations understand and appreciate the history of our community.”
Legacy Landmarks is an ongoing project, and CARD welcomes community participation. If you have information, photos, or stories to share, or questions about a park or facility name, please contact CARD at 530-895-4711 or info@chicorec.gov.
