Join me for an introduction to watercolor painting and foundational color theory. In this class, students will apply newly learned techniques directly to a selected watercolor image. Each participant will choose one image prior to class, and the sketch will be prepared in advance so students can focus on painting techniques and color application.

The class begins with an overview of the color wheel, including primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, and how these relationships influence painting decisions. Students will learn practical approaches to selecting colors, building color harmony, and creating balanced compositions.

Instruction will also cover shading techniques, including how to mix colors for shadows and depth while maintaining harmony within the painting. Students will explore complementary colors, warm and cool undertones, and methods for avoiding muddy color combinations. Additional demonstrations will show how neutralized and muted tones can be used effectively to create dimension and cohesion.

Each student will receive a take-home color wheel for future reference. For those interested in continuing their watercolor practice, a beginner-friendly supply and paint recommendation list will also be provided.
