Join our Park Explorer Survival Clubs (PESC)!

PESC: Trackers (1st-3rd grade)

This Club is a great fit for beginners and explorers who love discovering the park at their own pace through playful exploration with friends, creative nature projects, and group games.

Each week, participants will set out to experience the park and natural areas around the Chico Creek Nature Center in a whole new way. Explorers might create their own nature journal, observe the rhythms of local wildlife (and meeting the animals that live at the Nature Center!), or spend time getting to know the resident animals at the Nature Center. Activities center on discovery—engaging the senses, encouraging curiosity, and helping participants notice the small wonders of the outdoor world. Whether it’s a creative nature project, a guided walk, or a playful group activity, every session offers a fresh perspective on the landscapes around them.

PESC: Pathfinders (4th-5th grade)

This Club is an intermediate leval designed for explorers who are are ready to take the next step beyond discovery—building foundational outdoor and survival skills through hands-on challenges, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Each week, participants will venture into the park to strengthen their connection with nature while developing practical outdoor skills. Explorers will learn the basics of navigation, shelter building, knots and cordage, wildlife observation (and meeting the animals that live at the Nature Center!), and other survival techniques through interactive games, guided hikes, creative challenges, and team activities. As the session progresses, participants will build confidence in their abilities and apply what they've learned during a fun scenario day that brings their new skills together.

PESC: Trailblazers (6th-8th grade)

This Club is designed for advanced explorers who are serious about learning foundational survival skills—ready to learn, stay focused, tackle hands-on challenges, and put their knowledge to the test.

Each week, participants will set out to explore the wild spaces around the Chico Creek Nature Center — uncovering hidden trails, spotting local wildlife (and meeting the animals that live at the Nature Center!), and learning essential survival skills like navigation and shelter building. Participants will also practice real-world outdoor skills, including identifying plants and natural materials, testing their cordage and rope techniques, and applying what they’ve learned during an ultimate scenario day that wraps up the session. Through hands-on activities, team challenges, and immersive wilderness experiences, every session offers a new adventure that builds confidence, strengthens resilience, and deepens their connection to the great outdoors.
